You invest a lot of hours in at work, and you want to know that those hours have meant something. It’s time that you start managing your career effectively, and that means that you have to focus on growth and development. You don’t have to start pulling double overtime, but you do have to consider what you want from your career so that you can figure out the path that you need to take to push it further. - Set Clear Goals
The biggest question that you have to ask yourself is what you want. What do you want out of your future? When you ask yourself that question, you need to think about what you’ve done for your career so far, and what you hope to do next. Setting goals gives you the chance to achieve them. - Set Milestones
You have your goals, but picture your goals at the top of a ladder with about one hundred steps before you reach the top. Those milestones that you set can be every twenty steps or so – metaphorically, of course. Once you set milestones for yourself, you need to run them past someone that you trust to see whether you can get help with managing your career correctly. Develop a timeline that will cover your milestones, and give yourself an end goal – you’ll not regret it!
- Ask Your Boss For Help
The company that you are currently working for is very likely to have a career development program – especially if you have a good boss. In fact, you need to consider the training and education that your workplace is willing to give you. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you could discover.
- Own It
Just because you work for someone else, doesn’t mean that you can’t further your career. You can work on your own goals in your spare time if you want to, but you must always keep in mind that this is your career path and no one else’s. Take control of it and own it – you’re the one walking it, after all.
- Write It Down
You need to keep track of what you want from your career. So, you need to write down what it is that you want most and go after it. Turn those dreams into solid plans, and do it when you write down what you want!
