There are many occasions in life where you might find yourself being highly motivated to turn over a new leaf, make a real change, and “reinvent” yourself in one sense or another.
Human beings naturally yearn for the ability to reinvent themselves at semi regular intervals – which is, no doubt, why annual New Year’s resolutions are such a beloved and well-established tradition.
Of course, though, New Year’s resolutions often don’t have the long term effect we might like, and are well known for losing their momentum as early as February or March.
A big part of the key to successful self-reinvention is that it has to be done from a position of calm and balance.
Here are a few tips for taking calm action to reinvent yourself.
Go for a long walk to detach and gain some perspective and insight
First things first; if you feel as though you are simply heading down the wrong paths in life (but aren’t really sure exactly how), you need to come up with ways to detach from your current circumstances a bit, so that you can gain a bit of reasonable perspective and insight.
One excellent practice here, which people have used since time immemorial, is to go for a long walk and to mull over your thoughts, feelings, ambitions, and ideas, as you stroll.
Generally speaking, thoughts will flow a lot more easily, and you will be in a much more impartial and “proactive” mindset, when you are walking versus when you are sitting at home on the sofa.
List out the key issues you want to tackle, and then look for the “next step” in each instance
If you don’t have a reasonably clear idea of at least a few of the things you want to achieve, or in any case want to change, then your chances of successfully reinventing yourself aren’t likely to be very high.
List out at least some of the key issues you want to tackle, and use these as a starting point to focus your energies on. Importantly, though, you need to immediately look for the “next step” that you can take in each instance, to move towards achieving your ambitions.
It might be that you want to improve your dental health, in which case researching good home dental supplies might be a reasonable first action.
Don’t worry about having a perfect plan laid out from A-Z. Just focus on the next small action, at any given point.
Work on your own well-being and motivation, in addition to taking action
Self-reinvention is often presented as a monumental and focused effort of will and self overcoming, first and foremost.
While willpower will certainly play a role, however, it’s just as important to keep yourself feeling positive, upbeat, and motivated, in addition to driving yourself to take consistent action.
Consider doing a home course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to fight back against your own negative thoughts. Take the time to regularly listen to songs that you find uplifting. Get enough sleep. Simply focus on your own well-being and motivation.
