Find Your Breath with Wellness Coach Kelly Collins
We’re excited because we’re continuing that journey down the road to better women’s health. I was lucky because I found the real deal. We’ve got a tremendous women’s health coach. Somebody who’s been studying for a long time and able to bring to you the best stuff for women trying to deal with this mania we like to call 2020. We’re going ahead and we’re going to talk to Kelly Collins from KellyCollinsWellness.com. I had a great chat with Kelly and I’m excited to bring her to you because she blew me away with the way she thinks, the way she talks, and the way she views a woman’s health. Kelly Collins is a yoga wellness and empowerment teacher on a mission to help raise the collective consciousness through reconnecting and rebalancing the mind-body-spirit through movement, breathwork and mindfulness practices. You know how I love mindfulness. She is passionate about empowering people to uncover the deepest parts of themselves, and to heal so that they can move forward to flourish and share their unique gifts with the world. Kelly, welcome to our show.
Thank you for having me.
You’re welcome. I’m super excited about it. Can you tell me what got you started down the road to helping women with their health and wellness?
I grew up doing gymnastics, soccer, cheerleading and all sorts of sports. When I was in college, I started doing fitness. I became a personal trainer. I started teaching indoor spin classes and that’s where all of this began. Through that, I worked with clients for quite some time. At one point, I felt something was missing. I was seeing all of these results with my clients, but then I was seeing people not being able to keep the weight off or to keep the muscle that they had built on. A lot of people were not able to sustain the big changes that they had worked so hard to make.
At the same time, I realized my mindset wasn’t what it should be. I had a lot of negative self-talk and I was very perfectionist. I realized I needed mindfulness of some sort. I didn’t know what to call it back then. I decided to get yoga teacher training. When I went and did that in Bali, I went for about three weeks. I learned how to meditate. I learned how to use mantra, which for me is one of the main keys to reprogramming our brain. That is where the Kelly Collins Wellness brand began and that was several years ago.
Why don’t we start with mindfulness and meditation? One of the things that I find is that a lot of people don’t understand it. What do you consider a practical working definition for both mindfulness and meditation?
A practical definition for both mindfulness and meditation would be practices that are helping you to cultivate awareness of your inner thoughts and inner world, with that awareness you can begin to create the life that you want consciously. When we are on autopilot functioning off of all of these stories that we’ve been told to believe or that have embedded themselves in us because of trauma or different situations that we’ve been. Going through in our life, we are then creating our life from that place. What these practices provide us is the space to find clarity and awareness of our inner world and our thought patterns. Also, to connect with our authentic higher self and consciously create the life that we are here to live.
I love the idea of conscious creation because I find that many people are waking up in their 30s and 40s and they’re like, “How did I get here? What is it I’m supposed to do with the rest of my life?” If I were to come to you as a client, where would you start with me, assuming that I was able to share with you where I am and where I want to go?
The program that I’ve created is a one-on-one program. It does vary a little bit from person to person. If you were coming to me feeling a little bit lost in life, you had woken up one day and you’re like, “Where am I going? What am I doing?” We would start with breath awareness and meditation to begin to cultivate that awareness, then we would build on from there. In my program, we do a lot of healing modalities. We do inner child healing, healing around limiting beliefs, those things that are holding you back in life. We do a lot of work around boundaries so that you can create boundaries within yourself and with others. We talked about the shoulding through life. Stop doing things because you think you should rather doing them because this is what your soul came here to do. I’m a huge believer in that. We all came here with unique gifts to share with the world. Many of us are blocked off from that because of those stories, that conditioning, and what we think we should be doing. We’re very disconnected because we have so much noise around us at all times, especially in 2020.
I love listening to people who have thought through the process of life. Most people think that they should have somehow walked in here with all the knowledge and all the information that they needed to be something amazing. Unfortunately, as you and I both know people who are amazing have made amazing messes of their life almost all the time before they get where they’re going. What do you find is the greatest challenge or the greatest obstacle for people to move from the space they’re in to this space where they want to go?
It’s that noise from the outer world. We’re inundated with the media, social media, and technology. We always have screens on and where we’re at in humanity. In my generation, social media came about when I was in my teens but think about the younger generations growing up, that’s all they’ve ever known. The generations older than me still have had TV, cable and all of that. The internet began and we have so much noise around us now. Many people don’t get out in nature. We live in cities. We have this constant noise around us. When we can’t find a place of quiet, we can’t find that inner clarity and that inner wisdom that want to come through and that is always there for us.
I love the concept of inner wisdom. I think that there is a voice that you and I were both born with, and so have all the successful thinkers out in the audience been born with, but that voice gets drowned out by all the noise. Do you have exercises or practices that you like to do to cut down the noise for yourself?
Absolutely, and these are practices I work with all of my clients as well. Journaling is one of the main things that I do. I try to journal every first thing in the morning because when we wake up, we’re in this clearer state. We’re not completely alert yet, but we have all of this stuff that’s come through while we were sleeping. I’m a huge fan of journaling every morning. I’m freewriting for a couple of pages and allowing whatever wants to come out. I’m also writing a full page of gratitude list of what you’re grateful for. You can take it a step further and write down your plans and your goals for the day. You get clear on what your purpose is that day and what you’re trying to bring out to the world.
That freewriting allows you to clear your subconscious of negativity and limiting beliefs. A lot of people, when they first start out with this do notice a lot of negative things coming out. That’s great because a lot of us, especially men, have spent years and years pushing things down. Not letting them come through because we’ve been taught that as a man, you’re weak if you show emotion or as a woman, you’re crazy if you show emotion. When we allow those things to come out on paper, we’re releasing so much. That’s why I’m a huge fan of journaling. Breathwork and meditation are also two huge ways, as well as yoga and movement, moving our body, releasing stagnant energy. It doesn’t have to be going to the gym and killing yourself for an hour and a half to try to burn calories. I’m not a fan of that. What I am a fan of is moving your body so you feel good, open and strong. Anyone can find any sort of movement practice that works for them.
Trust your inner knowing. Trust that whatever's happening to you is here to teach you a lesson. Share on XI had told you that I had spent quite a bit of time on your website, which is beautiful. If you haven’t already, you should go to KellyCollinsWellness.com. One of the things that are fascinating to me is an article you wrote about how to use your body to tap into your intuition. I was wondering if you could talk on that. It was a show episode but it’s fascinating. How do you see intuition playing into a person moving towards the end of 2020 and getting into a better 2021?
Our bodies have infinite wisdom. What I like always to say is that we have the mind, the body, the spirit or the soul. Many of us have forgotten that soul piece. That’s what a lot of this mindfulness is about like returning to our soul, but they are all interconnected. When you are imbalanced physically, you are imbalanced energetically and vice versa. I can dive into that if you want to talk about the chakra system a little bit. I love to talk about that. When it comes to our intuition, our bodies are always telling us when something is right or wrong for us. It’s about finding that space in that quiet to get in-tune with your body and your intuition, and understanding what happens in your body when your intuition is speaking to you.
For example, when something is going wrong with me and my intuition is trying to speak to me but I’m not listening, I get a tension up in my neck and shoulders. When my intuition is telling me something that’s right for me and I’m excited about it, it’s like this opening and expansion in my heart space. We all have different physical cues that we feel when our intuition is speaking to us. When you think of intuition, it can also be your gut feeling. If you want to think of it a little bit more westernize it’s our gut feelings or that gut sensation that we get. We feel it in our stomach too when something goes wrong and we get those knots in our stomach. We all have different physical reactions, but it is about becoming in-tune with your body and then pairing those two together. That is a big reason why I’m a huge fan of physical movement and becoming in-tune with your physical body.
I love it because when I was younger, I would have thought that a lot of things like the chakra system and things were woo-woo or too out there. One day something happened and it was amazing. I thought I was anxious and uptight. All I was having was muscle spasms in my back from standing too long, not stretching enough and not moving enough. I realized there’s this body-mind connection. That is funny because a lot of times we think we feel a certain way when we feel something else. Please dive into the chakras, enlighten us, tell us how it works, and why is that important?
Where were the muscle spasms in your back?
It’s right between my shoulder blades and right up around my neck. I’m pharmacist by profession. We were on the phone all the time before voicemails, fax messages and electronic prescribing. I stood for about twelve years with my head to the right pressing against my shoulder.
That will do it. With the chakra system, I base a lot of my teaching off of it. If you go to my website, I have a blog for each chakra, which gives tips for balancing. It tells you what it is, what it does, when its balance or out of balance and all of that. You can check those out. What I love about this system is that they reconnect the mind-body and the spirit. Each chakra correlates to specific physical parts of our body including muscles, glands, organs and all of that. Each one correlates to a nerve plexus along our spine. That’s the physical piece and when out of balance, those physical parts of our body can start to have issues. They also correlate to our emotional and mental states of being as well. I’ve found this to be a very cohesive way to look at both physical and energetic bodies and to bring everything back together.
The first one is at the base of the spine. That’s the root chakra and it’s our most material earthly chakra. It’s correlated with feeling safe and secure in our bodies in this physical world. It not only includes the health of our physical body, but it also includes our financial wellbeing and how we feel financially secure. If you have issues with your sciatic nerve that relates to the root chakra. That can be causing an imbalance in the root chakra. Reversely, an imbalance in the root chakra can cause issues with your sciatic nerve or any of those other lower organs.
Then next is our sacral chakra. That’s our center of emotional intelligence, creativity, abundance, feeling fluid and not rigid. Going back to the root chakra, I wanted to mention this. The shadow side when we’re out of balance is fear and anxiety, which so many of us in 2020 are going through. There are so much fear and anxiety. I have all these practices and I get anxiety all the time. It’s inevitable and that’s because we’re feeling ungrounded and unsafe. With that, I would like to recommend that everyone works on grounding, going out in nature, walking barefoot on the earth, eating grounding foods like root veggies, meat is a grounding food. I always recommend organic. Know where your meat is coming from.
As of for 2020, that’s relevant. Try to stay grounded. They can read the blog if they want to, to get more ideas for that. Going back to the sacral chakra, that governs our reproductive systems and that’s about being more fluid and go with the flow in life, which also is very important because who knows what’s happening. We got to be able to go with the flow. The element of that one is water. If you think of being like water, being adaptable, and being in-tune with your emotions. This is why journaling is great, getting your emotions out on paper, sharing them when they need to be shared with others, and all of that.
The next chakra is our solar plexus. It’s between the navel and the lower ribs, the upper belly. That’s our center feeling empowered and feeling able to transform our lives. What our conversation on my podcast was all about is being confident and courageous. The element of that one is fire. It’s that inner fire. When we’re balanced here, we’re in our worth and understanding that we are worthy of what we truly desire in life. That one governs our digestive system. If you have digestive issues, you can look to that chakra and see was that imbalanced first or was that thing? It’s fun to do. Those are three material chakras.
Our next one is our heart. Our heart is the bridge between our earthly chakras and our upper etherial chakras. Our heart is the center of unconditional love, love for all beings, empathy, compassion, relationship and forgiveness. If you think about it, all of these are important. That heart one is huge with all of the social injustice going on. Remembering that we are all connected with people on the other side of the world who are experiencing pain and hunger. All of that does affect us. That one, the element is air.
We then go up to our upper chakras and I’ll go through them quickly. Throat chakra is our center of being able to communicate authentically with confidence, clarity and compassion. That’s how I always like to put it, the three Cs. You’re able to communicate your truth. You’re able to stand up for yourself and others when it’s needed. You’re doing so always in a place of compassion, clarity and confidence. The next we have our third eye. It’s between the brows and it’s our center of intuition. Going back to intuition, this is where we are tapped into that inner knowing, that inner clarity and those gut feelings. We allow it to guide our lives. We trust that inner knowing even though a lot of times, our intuition is telling us things we don’t want to hear. It’s important to build that trust with your inner knowing with something higher than yourself so that when you’re going through those challenging times in life like we are now, you trust that whatever’s happening to you is here to teach you a lesson. If you’re listening, you’re going to be able to take that lesson and move forward in the right direction. There is no wrong direction, but there are less detours if you’re tapped in.
Lastly, is our crown chakra, which is our center of connection to source, the universe, God or whatever that means to you. What I love about this one is it’s also our center of oneness. We need to remember oneness as a collective. When we recognize that we are one with all living beings, animals, humans, plants, everything, we’re also one with source, God, universe or whatever you want to call it. That divine wisdom we have within us. We are divine beings and we are capable of creating the life that we desire and that we were meant to do in our lives. The last thing I want to say about those is that all of them develop from the time we’re in our mother’s womb up to adolescence. That is where we can gather these limiting beliefs and these energetic blocks. Limiting beliefs are energetic blocks if you go into the energy piece of it. By healing our chakras, we’re going to recognize those stories, those limiting beliefs, and then we can begin to heal as a whole.
We are divine beings. We are capable of creating the life that we desire. Share on XI think we got our money’s worth there. One thing though that I want to point out is that no one on this planet is walking around with all of their chakras in alignment at all times.
No, and they never will be.
Kelly, the smile on your face told me why that’s important. Can you put it in your words, why it’s important to understand that this is a process?
You can very briefly balance out all your chakras, but life is still happening. Something is going to throw it out of balance. When it comes to healing ourselves from trauma, stories, from energetic blocks, and all of that, it’s like peeling back layers of an onion. I heard something in a book that I was listening to. They said, “Once you heal, heal more.” You might heal yourself for a moment but life is going to happen. Life’s going to trigger you. Those things are going to come back up. Hopefully, if you’re doing the work every time they come back up, you’ll already know it’s there. It’s not going to be quite as big of a shock. You have already done a lot of the work. It’s not going to be quite as challenging, depending on the trigger and hopefully, if you’ve put these mindfulness practices in place, you’re going to be able to handle everything, all the ebbs and flows, all of the challenges of life with a little bit more grace and ease. It’s important to remember that no one is perfect. We’re all on this continuous journey. That’s an important piece, and having self-compassion and that non-judgment towards ourselves and others.
I’m believing that a lot of the people that are reading are thinking, “That all sounds good and fine first thing in the morning, or if I happen to be off and the kids are at school or whatever.” How can we find peace with our inner energy, our chakra and so forth when life is going on? Let’s say when we’re in the middle of traffic or the middle of a busy day at the pharmacy, how do we find it at the moment?
Mindfulness is a lifelong practice. It’s not just sitting there in the morning, meditating, journaling or doing your yoga practice. You can practice being in the moment, that mindfulness in every moment of life. As you’re driving in your car, turn off your radio and focus on what’s in front of you. Focus on the here and the now, the cars that you’re seeing, the lines on the road, the blue sky. That is in itself presence and mindfulness. You can practice it at all times. When you’re walking your dog, focusing on the steps that you’re taking, with each step feeling the energy between your foot and the earth, noticing the trees, the birds, and everything around you. When you practice that, you begin to naturally cultivate this ability to be more present and in the now in your moment or your life.
One of the things that you got me thinking about when you were talking about breathwork is the t-shirts came out that said, “I can’t breathe.” There were a lot of big feelings going on around that. Intuitively speaking, I felt like part of the reason why the big feelings came out is very few people feel like they can’t breathe now. Would you please explain to us what breathwork is? Maybe a basic step or two about how a person could go practice and find that breath that we all seem to be missing because of all the noise you mentioned.
Before 2020, there was already a big issue with people and their ability to breathe and connect with that. Breath is our life force energy. Without it, we don’t have life. Most of us sit at a computer many hours of the day. If they’re not at their computer, they’re watching TV or bent over looking at their phone. What this physically is doing is tightening up our intercostal muscles and back muscles. Intercostal muscles are the muscles between our ribs. It’s tightening up the rib cage, which constricts our breathing. When you think about anxiety, what happens when we have anxiety? We get shortness of breath. When we have tightness in the structures that allow us to breathe, that cultivates more anxiety.
It’s like a double-edged sword. You’re physically inducing more anxiety and then you have anxiety from everything that’s going on, which is physically tightening you up. Everything’s super related. What we can do to open ourselves up more and to connect with this breath, because when we do bring more breath into the body, we do feel more alive, energized, vibrant, clear and connected. The simplest way I like to teach it is through a wave breath. That’s what it’s called. Do you want me to guide everyone through it for a couple of minutes?
I certainly could use it. I got to go to work and I want to breathe well.
I recommend finding a comfortable seat, closing down your eyes, and placing your palms on your lower belly. Placing the hands on the lower belly and closing the eyes if you’re in a place where you can. Start to breathe and notice the breath. You’ll notice the flow of breath coming in through the nose, flowing down the back of the throat and filling up the lower lungs. You start to feel your belly expand. As you exhale, feel the breath leave the lower lungs, the upper lungs, going up the back of the throat, and out of the nose. Take a couple of breaths like that on your own. Noticing the flow of cool breath coming in and the flow of warmer breath flowing out. Take one more breath like that and at the end of your exhale, you’re going to breathe out all the way and hold empty for a count of 3, 2, 1.
When you inhale, I want you to focus on filling up your lower belly. Breathe into the lower belly, 3, 2, 1. Hold for a count of 3, 2, 1, and then exhale out of the belly. Allow it to soften for that count of three and hold empty for 3, 2, 1. We’re going to add on inhale. First, fill up your belly all the way like a balloon and then fill up your rib. I want you to feel your ribs expand out in all four directions. Hold the breath in, count to 3, 2, and then exhale first from your ribs, and then your belly and allow your belly to soften. Hold empty for that count of 3, 2, 1. Inhale to belly then ribs. This time add into your heart space. Fill up your chest and your upper back. Keep pressing the belly out, hold the breath in 3, 2, 1.
Exhale out of your heart space and then your ribs, and then your belly. Empty all the way and then hold for a count of 3, 2, 1. It’s like a wave. Inhale to the belly, ribs, heart, hold 3, 2, 1. Exhale heart, ribs, belly, hold for 3, 2, 1. One more time. Inhale belly ribs, heart, hold. Exhale heart, ribs, belly, and hold. Then take a big breath and fill up all three parts. Take an open mouth exhale. Sigh it out and then bring your awareness back to the room you’re in or wherever you are. You can feel the temperature of the air on your skin and feel your heartbeat. When you’re ready, open your eyes if they’re closed. That’s it.
That was fantastic. How can you not feel better when you go through an exercise like that?
The more breath you bring into your body, the more you feel alive, energized, clear and connected. Share on XIt’s like an instant uplift glow up, is that what they call it?
The thing is that we go through days and days without ever taking the time to consciously focus on relaxing and then we wonder why we’re so tense. Can you speak directly to women’s issues? What are the biggest challenges that women are facing in this society in 2020 and in general?
One of the things that we’ve been going through since I’ve been alive and for hundreds of years is this pressure to look a certain way, whatever the media is deeming to be what’s beautiful. It’s important for us all to find self-acceptance with our bodies, to nourish our bodies, and to allow our bodies to look the way that they are meant to look. To remember there’s not a one size fits all approach to beauty or look to beauty. It’s about how you’re feeling. I always like to say that your inner world does affect your outer world. If you’re feeling glowing and radiant inside, you’re going to be glowing and radiant on the outside.
That’s one thing. Another is this added pressure in us. We have our careers and we are doing a lot of the “men’s work” these days but we’re still expected in many situations also still to do the things at home. This balance between career, motherhood, being a wife or a partner is a big challenge. What we’re seeing with the sex trade, sex trafficking, and all of that, it’s this need for women to own our power. To step into our divine feminine energy, to focus on self-care, and finding that clarity and compassion within. When we find that, we can bring that out to the world. I believe if all women were empowered, supporting one another, supporting men and allowing men to also be vulnerable and open, we could create this beautiful world that is there for us but we’re not there quite yet.
One of my favorite quotes was, “Imagine what would happen to the United States’ economy if every woman woke up tomorrow and felt good about herself.” People would crumble and all of that. That was a brilliant and beautiful answer. Can you now speak to the men? How can I as a man in 2020 best support the women in my life, the women that I work with, the women at home, and those types of things?
With men, the big things that I’m seeing that more and more men are becoming open it, and it’s so beautiful and needed, is this willingness to look at their emotions. I’m seeing a lot of men get into journaling and self-reflection practices like meditation. When men do that, it’s all about the inner work. If we each do our work to heal ourselves and to bring forth our gifts, we’re going to be able to support the people around us. I think for men, within themselves, finding that emotional intelligence, that vulnerability to communicate in a way that’s confident, clear and compassionate.
That will be an incredible way to support women. One of the things that drive women crazy is not understanding what’s going on in a man’s brain. By healing and doing their work, they’re going to step into their divine masculine energy, this strong supportive, and emotionally intelligent role. They’re going to be able to support the women in the way that that woman needs to. We’re all different. All of our relationships are different. That’s where that inner awareness and that ability to communicate well can provide so much support and love in each couple or partnerships’ relationship.
I know that one of the best days of my life was the day that I realized I didn’t have to be a He-Man. I realized I didn’t have to know everything. I didn’t have to feel strong all the time. I would encourage the men in the audience to think about what Kelly’s talking about with the work. One of the things I find interesting about it is that the work makes life easier. It’s almost more work not to do the work and then try to move the whole world with both hands. I wanted to talk to you a little bit about limiting beliefs because I know it’s something you have worked hard on in your life. What do you find as some of the basic strategies for working through a person’s limiting beliefs?
I think journaling and meditation. There are a variety of meditations that you can do, but simple thought awareness and breath awareness meditation. Similar to what we’ve just did, focusing on the breath and then allowing thoughts to come up as they will. One of the biggest misconceptions with meditation is that you’re supposed to quiet your mind, when what it’s about is cultivating awareness of those thought patterns. If you’ve never done it before, there’s a good chance that your thought patterns are functioning in your limiting beliefs in your conditioning, not in your actual truth. By allowing thoughts to come up and noticing them as they come up, you start to become aware of your limiting beliefs. You also get the same thing when you free write in a journal like I talked about. You start to see patterns of the things that are coming up for you.
I’m sure all of us, no matter where you are or if you’ve done any of this stuff before or not, I’m sure you have some awareness of the patterns that have played out in your life. Even simply thinking back to, “What are the things that continuously come up for me in my life?” That is where those limiting beliefs are coming up and blocking you from living out the best life that you possibly can. What changed my life when I learned meditation and mantra was that I went on this retreat and I knew I had body image issues. I had self-deprecating thoughts. I’m always being mean to myself. I realized that it was not right and not good. I didn’t want to continue to live my life that way.
When I went on this retreat, I already had that in my mind. Through meditation, I started to notice the common themes that were popping up in my head, then the way that I began to heal it is through mantra work. When you notice a continuous limiting belief come up like, “I am unworthy, I am not strong, I’m weak or I’m not capable of doing that because of this and that.” You can create a mantra that helps to counteract that and reprogram your brain. By meditating with that mantra or simply reciting that mantra as you drive in your car and as you go through your day, you’re reprogramming your brain. These limiting beliefs are programmed as a loop in our brains. The way to get rid of them is first to find the awareness and then to practice changing them, and to practice with that continuously.
One of my main limiting beliefs was that I was unworthy and the way that I counteracted that was through a mantra. I used to say, this is the first one I ever created for myself, “I am strength. I am beauty. I am love.” Every time I started to feel like crap about myself, I would repeat that mantra. I swear it worked and it still comes up. That unworthiness comes up in different situations, but now I see it when it comes up. I know it’s not real because our thoughts, our ego, that’s not real. What’s real is our intuition in our hearts. Being able to differentiate that can be a whole other topic. That’s where intuition comes to play. By being able to see it, label it, understand that is not the truth, then counteract that with a mantra, you can start to change your life. It’s pretty simple when you get into it.
I love what you said it’s not the truth. A lot of people are afraid to bring their thoughts to the foreground because their thoughts are scary to them. The only way to beat your thoughts is to invite them in, have a chat with them, and then change the story. I think that’s wonderful. Kelly, tell us how we can work with you and how we can learn more about you? What your next big mission is?
