Nothing seems certain right now, and that can be quite unsettling, but one thing we do know is that we’re going to have to adjust to change. Over the past few months, there has been an unprecedented shift in the way we live our lives due to COVID-19, and while at one point it seemed so strange to be standing two metres apart queuing to get into the supermarket, somehow we have let go of our old normal. We are now settling into what seems to be the new one. There is still a long way to go, retail shops are yet to open, and many people are still out of work or working from home, but when the world gets back on its feet, it’s going to be different. There is going to be restrictions, and while we’ve done an excellent job of adjusting so far, it seemed at first that it was only going to be temporary. However, the “new normal” will be the way things are for a lot longer, maybe even forever. So, how can you adjust to the new normal?
Allow Yourself To Grieve The “Old” Normal
First of all, it’s perfectly okay to miss the old ways, feel a sense of loss and be sad about what has happened. Once you have allowed yourself to grieve, there will be more space to start embracing your New Normal.
Create A New Routine
It’s important to have a routine to help you to feel more normal in a time of chaos. You might have to get a little creative or take up new hobbies that you might not have done before. As you’re no longer able to go to the gym, you’ll have to get online to do home work-outs or take up running or tennis or golf which can all be done with a social distance. Are you missing that delicious morning coffee to kick off your day? Treat yourself to a new coffee roasting machine and make your own at home. You might need to think outside the box a little, but there are alternatives for everything.
Find Pockets Of Joy
The new normal can be challenging, so it’s important to celebrate the little things. If you enjoyed a nice walk, received something nice in the post or had a relaxing bath, take note of these things and make the most of them.
Give Yourself A Break
Take things one step at a time. We may not know it is around the corner, so set yourself realistic goals and allow yourself to adjust them when you need to. Remember that we are currently living in extraordinary times, so give yourself some grace when you need to.
Stay Informed
As we adjust to the New Normal, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the news due to the changing COVID-19 landscape and the ongoing updates. However, tuning in to every single development can quickly become overwhelming, so stay informed but only get your information from reputable sources rather than reading other people’s opinions on social media where they are venting and voicing their concerns.
