Whether you are a proud Lego collector, or you require display cases for showcasing Lego sets within your store, knowing how to care for your Lego display cases is imperative.
For huge Lego displays in massive retail stores, window and glass experts like Shine On Group can assist, but what about when you are in charge?
When it comes to the basic cleaning of your display case, you are advised to simply use water or an approved cleaner combined with a clean anti-static cloth, a damp paper towel, or a soft rag. You should never use any chemicals to clean your acrylic Lego display case. A general rule is that if the cleaner has a distinct smell, then don’t use it.
Some of the cleaners you need to avoid are as follows:
- Kitchen scouring compounds
- Solvents
- Window cleaning sprays
- Lacquer thinner
- Carbon tetrachloride
- Alcohol
- Benzene
- Gasoline
- Acetone
If you don’t have access to an acrylic cleaner, you can always combine lukewarm water with mild soap or detergent. When applying the mixture, make sure you do so with light pressure. After you have cleaned the material, you should rinse it with clean water and use a damp cloth to dry the display case via a blotting method.
Aside from this, you should avoid using any abrasive materials to wipe your display case, as this could damage the material by causing scratches. Instead, you should always use a soft and damp cloth. If you do end up scratching your case, it’s not the end of the world entirely, as you can find scratch removers in supermarkets and such like. To do this, invest in a plastic scratch remover, and apply it to the surface with a soft flannel pad. Once the scratch has been eliminated, you will need to remove all the residue and then polish the acrylic. This works for light scratches, but if you have a deeper scratch, you may need to sand the material. However, the best form of care, in this case, is prevention, so try to avoid this scenario altogether.
If you need to remove sticky residue, perhaps when you purchased the case it had a sticker on it, for example, then you need to choose a safe cleaner that has been designed for acrylics. There are other methods that a lot of people utilise, and they can cause great damage to the material. This includes using a strong remover or solvent. This is not advised because these products are very harsh and will damage the surface of your case. Aside from this, you should never use a sharp object to remove the sticky residue because this can result in scratches.
Many people opt to protect their acrylic display cases by polishing them. This is something that you are advised to do once you have had your case for a little while, and you want to protect the longevity of it. To do this, all you need is a high-quality plastic cleaner and polish. You can apply this to the material in a thin and even coat using a clean soft cloth. Afterwards, use a cotton flannel to lightly polish the area. Once this complete, it is advisable to use a damp cloth to wipe the display case. Otherwise dust particles can be attracted to the area because of electrostatic charges.
