High staff turnover can be one of the worst things to afflict a small business. As an employer, you are eager to facilitate a cohesive team that enables your venture to compete with your already well established industry rivals. Without this cohesiveness, you may find that your supply chain management dwindles, your customer service levels drop, and you aren’t as productive as a startup as you’d like to be. You need to employ strategies to hold onto your best staff so that they don’t jump ship and you don’t end up with a high staff turnover.

Environment

Ensure that you facilitate an office environment that your employees love to travel to every morning. Don’t allow your environment to fester and become a depressing place to be. Beige carpet tiles, misshapen blinds, damp and mold do nothing to make your employees feel excited about their jobs. Instead, you need to whip out the white paint, get some inspiring artwork on the walls, install some greenery and swap the boring individual desktop booths for collaborative meeting pods. You need to have an environment that means your employees are positively buzzing throughout the day. Thi means getting them decent chairs to sit on, great quality laptops and a decent WiFi connection. Give them the tools and the environment to be proactive and they will respond. They’ll also be more likely to remain in post even if a different job offer comes along.

Benefits

To keep your staff content in their roles, you need to show them that they are valued. To do this, provide a benefits package that is second to none. Don’t scrimp and invest as much as your business can logically afford. You could generate a package that provides health insurance, medical support, dental, and wellbeing. When considering how it works, go for a place that is easily accessible and won’t need your direct input. As well as this sort of package, opt for simple benefits that you control like a healthy allowance for holiday and an extra day off for birthdays. Ensure that you allow hour long lunch breaks and make your away day team building exercises fun and exciting.

Communicate

When you are a boss, you need to be honest and transparent with those individuals working with you. Being holed up in your own office never to be seen makes you look like some sort of mythical creature that employees tend to resent. Instead, get out there and communicate with your staff. Ask how they are getting on and have an open door policy. Ensure that you send out regular emails and have a Monday morning briefing each week to ensure that you gain insight from your staff. They may have ideas on initiatives that you want to implement and you can use this sort of forum to communicate targets. As you communicate to your staff and namecheck those individuals that go the extra mile, you are showing your staff that you value them and care. This pastoral boss role will make your staff think fondly of you, making them less likely to leave.

Follow this simple guide and you can maximize the chances of your staff remaining in their rules so you can create a cohesive and productive team.
